Pigeon pox (pox virus). This disease is also called pigeon cocoon. It is a disease caused by Pigeon pox virus. Blemishes are usually found on the featherless parts of the pigeon’s body, such as around the eyes or mouth, legs, etc. Infected pigeons have swollen eyelids, red eyes, and watery eyes. Infected pigeons need to be quickly removed and blisters should be removed at least twice a day with iodine compounds such as povisep or iodine.

Since there is no cure for smallpox, farm biosecurity is the main way to prevent the disease.

Symptoms of Pigeon pox

The pigeon will have a fever.
Will reduce eating.
The pigeon will be sitting with a sigh.
After 2-3 days, the spring buds appear around the eyes and later the blisters form.

Treatment and medicine for Pigeon pox

Pigeon smallpox is a viral infectious disease. Pigeon care is the real treatment. There are two ways to treat smallpox. E.g.-

The affected area should be cleaned with potassium permanganate or any disinfectant.
Ciprofloxacin or amoxicillin should be mixed with antibiotic water.
Paracetamol should be taken for fever.

Pigeon pox vaccine

Pigeons can be vaccinated against smallpox when they are 4-6 weeks old. The pox vaccine is available at the Upazila Livestock Hospital. Or chicken fowl pox vaccine is also available to buy privately. Private pox vaccine should be collected by contacting the dealer of poultry feed and it should be applied as per the rules.
